This RTMED Spinal Needle is a hollow, sharp needle used to access the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the spinal column for a variety of medical procedures. Spinal needles are made from high-quality steel and are sterilized. They are inserted into the CSF through the membranes surrounding the spinal cord, usually below the second lumbar vertebra.

1. Needle tip design:

Most modern spinal needles have a "pencil point" or conical tip, which is rounded and less likely to cause damage to the dura mater (the tough outer layer of the spinal cord) compared to a sharp cutting needle.

2. Lateral opening:

The needle has a side port near the tip to allow for smooth injection of medication into the subarachnoid space.

3. Gauge size:

The gauge refers to the needle diameter, with smaller gauges indicating thinner needles.

4. Stylet:

A removable metal wire inside the needle (stylet) helps guide the needle during insertion and can be removed once the needle is in the correct position.
