A disposable infusion set is a sterile, singleuse medical device that delivers IV fluids/medications from a container into a patient’s vein.
1. Main Components
|
Component |
Function |
|
Spike |
Pierces the rubber stopper of an IV bag/bottle; has an air vent with an air filter (0.5μm) to equalize pressure. |
|
Drip chamber |
Transparent chamber to observe drip rate; holds ~1/2 fluid; 1 mL ≈ 20 drops (standard). |
|
Flow regulator |
Adjusts drip rate by squeezing/releasing tubing. |
|
IV tubing |
Medical‑grade PVC; carries fluid; kink‑resistant. |
| Filter |
Filters particles ≥15μm; prevents embolism. |
|
Injection port |
For adding meds without re‑puncturing the vein. |
|
IV needle |
Inserts into vein; with protective cap |
· Check – Verify packaging is sealed, sterile, and within expiry.
· Assemble – Remove the spike cap; pierce the IV bag/bottle; hang it on an IV pole.
· Prime – Squeeze the drip chamber to fill it 1/2 full; open the roller clamp to flush air bubbles out of the tubing until fluid flows dropbydrop; close the clamp
· Access vein – Clean the patient’s skin; apply a tourniquet; insert the IV needle/catheter; secure with tape; release the tourniquet.
· Start infusion – Open the roller clamp; adjust to the prescribed rate (e.g., 20–60 drops/min).
· Monitor – Check for infiltration, air bubbles, or allergic reactions; replace the set every 24–48 hours (per protocol).
· Dispose – After use, discard the entire set in a biohazard sharps container.
