Chest Drainage Bottle: A Vital Guardian of Thoracic Health

A chest drainage bottle, also known as an underwater seal drain, is an essential medical device widely used in thoracic care to treat pneumothorax, pleural effusion and other conditions. It serves as a "one-way safety valve" to maintain pleural cavity negative pressure, promote lung re-expansion and prevent retrograde infection, playing an irreplaceable role in clinical treatment.

The device mainly consists of a transparent bottle body, drainage tube, connector and hook. Sterile water is injected into the bottle to form a water seal barrier, with the drainage tube inserted 2-3cm under water to block air backflow. It is divided into single-chamber, double-chamber and triple-chamber types, adapting to different drainage needs from small amounts of air/fluid to large-volume drainage with negative pressure suction.

In clinical use, the bottle must be placed below the chest drain insertion site to ensure gravity drainage, and all connections must be tight to maintain airtightness. Nurses need to observe the water column fluctuation and drainage fluid regularly—normal fluctuation indicates unobstructed tubes, while abnormal color or volume suggests potential problems. Strict aseptic operation and proper fixation of tubes are crucial to prevent dislodgement and infection.

As a silent guardian beside the bed, the chest drainage bottle effectively relieves thoracic pressure, helps patients recover respiratory function, and provides important clinical basis for treatment adjustment, embodying the practical value of medical devices in protecting human health.
